Chapter Four
Sophie
I pull into my driveway and send a quick text to Sylvie letting her know that I will be a few minutes late for our lunch date. I run to my door, unlock it, turn off the alarm and then hurry to my closet in the bedroom. I strip off my clothes and take a quick shower before grabbing some clean underwear, jeans and a nice shirt.
I dress as fast as possible and am nearly sprinting to the door when my phone goes off with a text. Iâm grateful to read that Sylvie is running a bit behind on lunch so me being late is no big deal. I still hustle though because not being on time is disrespectful in my opinion.
Itâs only eight minutes after noon when I pull into Sylvieâs drive. Iâm just in time to see a car pulling out of the other side of the half circle drive, and my jaw drops.
I park my car, shut off the engine and jump out of the seat. I practically bang the door down knocking so hard. I know Iâm being ornery and I probably just scared the crap out of her but I canât help myself. So I stand with my hands on my hips and try to look extremely stern. Sylvie yanks open the door and when she sees me her face blushes bright red.
âYou naughty woman! Who was in the car that just left, young lady!â I demand.
âIt was a work man and I had my gutters cleaned.â
âOh, is that what weâre calling it now? Good code, I like it.â I joke.
Sylvie sighs and walks back toward her dining room. I shut the door and follow her. âSo does gutter man have a name?â I ask.
âDrop it, Soph. It was nothing.â She replies.
âSo your gutters arenât sparkling clean then?â
Sylvie snorts out a laugh. âYouâre seriously irritating.â
âAnd yet you love me anyway. So who is he?â
âNo comment.â
âDamn it! Come on, Iâll share mine if you share yours.â I cajole.
âPass.â
âFine, fine be that way. What are we having for lunch, sister?â I ask, keeping my questions about the unnamed man to myself for now.
âI ordered pizza, it should be here in a few.â She says casually.
âOh dear God! Who are you and what have you done with my sister?â I grab her by the shoulders and shake her gently. âYou bring my real sister back, you alien scum!â
Sylvie starts laughing and trying to push me away. âI do order delivery on occasion, you know.â
âRight, like when you are possessed by aliens or when you have your gutters cleaned by strange nameless men.â
âEnough, smartass, can we please get down to business?â
âSure, letâs do that, Syl.â
Sylvie leads me to the dining table where there are papers stacked in two neat piles in the middle of it. âWe need to go over the liquor order for next week, the food orders for Heaven, the catered event in Hell and your projected budget for the next quarter.â Sylvie lists.
âOk, thatâs quite a bit more than I expected.
